Federal Opposition "Reluctant" on Multiculturalism

by Jordan Valageorgiou - Friday, 7 January 2011

The Federal Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Scott Morrison MP has provided the ECC with a copy of his recent speech to the Sydney Institute in which his comments on multiculturalism are:

“I am reluctant to use the term multiculturalism. It is a loaded term, too often associated with cultural relativism, and used to justify ethnic segregation on grounds that modern Australia is some form of cultural terra nullius.

Under this paradigm, multiculturalism is simply a licence to replicate your old culture in a new land, without any further obligation. This contradicts the overwhelming majority of our migrant experience in Australia.”

A full copy of this speech by Scott Morrison can be obtained from the ECC email admin@eccnsw.org.au

Together with the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) the ECC will be endeavouring to obtain further clarification from the Federal Opposition on its “reluctance” to multiculturalism.
