ECCNSW working on resettlement of refugees

by Esther Lozano - Thursday, 3 March 2016

ECCNSW recently participated with a number of other key stakeholders in a Community Workshop for the planning of the resettlement of 12,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees who will be welcomed in Australia over the coming year.

Premier Mike Baird has committed an estimated 4000-7000 to settle in NSW and appointed Professor Peter Shergold as Co ordinator General for the Refugee Resettlement.

A Joint Partnership Working Group (JPWG) led by Prof Shergold is ensuring a whole of government approach that will result in harnessing government programs and leveraging the community sector.

The Hon John Ajaka MLC Minister for Multiculturalism opened the workshop by warmly welcoming the representatives from government departments, non-government organisations, peak bodies, service providers, local agencies and community leaders.

As a peak body for CALD communities, ECCNSW was at the forefront of discussions and solutions. Priority areas were identified and innovative strategies were developed to best support a positive resettlement for refugees in NSW.
