Bin Trim Program - Waste solutions for a sustainable business

NSW businesses send more than 1.8 million tonnes of business waste to landfill each year. More than 70% of this could be reused or recycled. Reducing waste sent to landfill has environmental and economic benefits for everyone.

The Bin Trim Program is the largest business recycling program of its type in Australia and is funded by the Environment Protection Authority NSW (NSW EPA).

  • It has helped over 22,000 businesses in NSW divert waste away from landfill and into recycling.
  • It provides free advice and support to businesses on how to increase their recycling and reduce their waste to landfill.
  • Businesses with up to 400 employees (FTEs) are eligible to join the program.

The ECCNSW was a grantee of the Bin Trim Round 1 and 2 and successfully completed these projects with significant results in waste diversion for those  ‘hard to reach’ small businesses in Sydney, Newcastle and Central Coast areas. This support was delivered in 9 different languages and enabled CALD small businesses to reap the benefit of knowing more about waste reduction.

Given the success of these two rounds the ECCNSW was successful in the funding tender for the Bin Trim Round 3. ECCNSW now delivers the Bin Trim program in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Hindi, Tamil and Korean.

The ECCNSW’s bilingual Bin Trim assessors have specialised training and can:

  • Conduct free waste assessments and review the current waste management systems.
  • Provide a tailored action plan to reduce waste to landfill, increase recycling and potentially save money.
  • Provide support and follow up advice for a business to implement these action plans.
  • Help businesses access potential financial rebates for small scale recycling equipment.
